I was wondering how many of us would up and leave the good ol' US of A if things really collapsed big time. Sure we have our preps, but at some point is it a better option to emigrate to another country? Or does your loyalty to the US outweigh anything that could possibly happen?

I don't know if I would consider it loyalty, but I'm not going anywhere. If the country turns into total anarchy, which I don't believe will happen, we will either survive it or our place will become a 21st century Alamo.

I've thought about this from time to time. While I consider the U.S. my home, and have no desire to leave, I also think of myself as "portable" enough to live just about anywhere. The idea that home is where you hang your hat really speaks to me. Yet, I don't know if I want to entrench myself into another culture. I suppose if it got bad enough, I could pack up and leave the U.S. But it would have to get pretty bad. My wife and family would have a lot to do with the decision too. I am prepared to live a pretty primitive existence, but my wife expects a higher quality of life. I suppose there are just too many variables for me to answer accurately, unless the decision was upon me.

I would stay in the US for one reason. In a TEOTWAKI situation all of us will have to scavenge to a certain point to survive until we could settle in a location long enough to become totally self sufficient.
How many of us who even study up on this stuff, could take care of certain things on their own right now. I don't know how to make my own oil for lamps and such things as that. I'm sure with trial and error I can figure out how to make fuel from animal fat and such, but right now it wouldn't work. This is only one issue. There are many others that fall in this category.
IMHO the US has so much stuff lying around in it that we could scavenge enough to keep us going for a few years until we could figure it all out. I don't think there are many other countries where this would be possible. While I have the skills needed to make a rudimentary life right now. I will still have to scavenge to add comfort to that life.

I work within a 20 mile radius of home and find myself looking for anything that might be useful in a major SHTF situation. Mainly diesel fuel and propane but also livestock that may end up on their own, fencing material, and other items that would help us run our little farm more efficiently.

I have even taken this as far as learning how the big tanker trucks that carry fuel and propane work and how to fill them from storage tanks. A smart scrounger could possibly equip themselves with enough to last a very long time. I do a lot of driving for work. while I am driving and when I see a potential source of anything useful, I think about how I would go about stocking myself. I am not advocating looting or stealing. I am just keeping my options open if something catostrophic would happen and most people would end up dieing, and there wouldn't be many survivors.

I occasionally find myself wondering "what am I thinking?" as I scan for post-SHTF supplies. It feels a little less "guilty" knowing I'm not alone.
