I was lookign around online for a good way to set up bars for a window so that it is more difficult for a "bad person" to get in, while still allowing those inside to open in case of fire? I'm looking to put these bars on all my windows, but am concerned about safety and the ability to open the window from the inside, especially in a kid's room.

After some research I found the following:

and

http://www.security-bars.com/index.htm

Here's a story about children dying inside a room with burglar bars during a fire, and it mentions a product that supposedly allows kids to get out of the bars.

I'm just posting this here in case someone has similar concerns. Just sharing my expereicne and concerns. Hope this helps.

I think window bars might be nice to have on hand in case of urban upheaval, but if I needed them right now, I think I'd need a better neighborhood instead. lol

I agree with happycamper. If you need window bars now, it is time to move.

I also agree with being prepared if TSHTF. I have made wood and metal window covers with shooting slots for the windows in my house in case that could be accessed from outside. The metal is to reinforce the edges and where the screw go through so they can't be easily splintered and pulled off of the house. They are kept in the garage and numbered so I know which window they fit. Yes, I did test fit them and make sure they fit.

Some folks use steel hurricane shutters because they can serve the same function of securing windows against uninvited guests, but they are controlled from inside the home so you remove the hazard of not being able to escape in a fire situation.
They also provide blackout protecrtion so you can run lights in a grid down situation without blowing youre opsec.
