It is important to have flashlight, warm clothes on, lighter or matches, food, knife, and maybe another weapon. Don't leave home without something to defend yourself in the wild, mountain lions and bears have no rules in fist fights.

What do need? Knife canteen with metal cup(plastic is worthless is you need to boil water) food Knowledge of how to make everything else you'll ever need. This includes: -how to get clean water from filth -how to set snares and traps -how to build a water tight shelter -ect. If you have the knowledge and knowhow, you don't "need" anything else. But I'm sure there are a lot of things you would "want"

Slingshot.
I almost never leave the house without one, there's always some sort of ammo around and most animals will turn tail and run if pipped. I have a folding one that fits right in my waist pack and takes up very little room.

Pretty close to my list JD... Most visitors to our country (NZ) and city folk are generally unaware of extremely weather conditions that can occur very rapidly in our bush (Forests). It gets dark very quickly, so survival here, depends a lot on your clothing and footwear as well as: Waterproof matches A knife [swiss is good] water/ tablets fishing line, cord and fish hook A billy [pot for cooking] A change of socks First aide kit Tarp for a makeshift shelter [although it is not necessary if you know how to build a lean-to].
