Hey fells, What's the best way to collect rainwater ? I can't exactly install a large cistern in my backyard, but I am thinking that I could collect water from the drains running off the roof. What would be the best way to do this?

The most basic rainwater harvesting system uses a simple Rainwater diverter connected to a water butt or other water storage vessel.
The collected water can then be used in the garden with a watering can, or directly via a hosepipe if the stored water is higher than the area to be watered.

I have to tell you we use a horse troff. It works for the watering of gardens and other no consuming uses.

You can connect a hose pipe via some means in order to collect the rain water, And I appreciate your idea of doing so.

I've thought of just putting some 10 gallon buckets under my gutters (only 4). To be honest, I am slightly concerned of putting water that has washed against tar from shingles in my garden. I know that any residue from the shingles would be minimal, but I just can't work up the nerve to try it.

We have large cement jars in our garden and we have pipes leading from our roof into these jars. We normally use this water during the dry season for things around the house.

The gravel and other materials on shingles have places where bacteria can grow. This could contaminate water running off the roof. If you use runoff from the roof I would boil it before using it for human consumption.

There is much more bacteria in the soil than on remington308's roof. I collect rainwater with this method- there is no oily film on top of the water, which means that any tar would be in trace amounts. I also use this water in my garden, with no ill effects.
