If you are using an old water heater install heat traps on the hot and cold pipes at the water heater to prevent heat loss. Some new water heaters have built-in heat traps.

I have no clue what a heat trap is, but our water heater is wrapped in one of those blankets made for them.

It has saved a little bit on the power bill, but I really want to get a tankless, on demand heater!
