I am not a survivalist yet. I wish I had any money at all. If the SHTF I would die quickly I bet. I am interested though. Right now I have no money (quite literally at the moment) and am taking an online college course in Business Management. I hope Obama doesn't outlaw business! My first question is, is the desert a good place for a bunker/hideout? You can't expect to hunt much, you don't have trees to burn or use for building, but the air is dry which is good for storing dry goods for a long time. There aren't many people and its sparsely populated to say the least. site says: Total cost for 10 acres of land is $12,500. Down payment of $500. Financing at 10% interest. Monthly payments of only $120! Here is the site http://www.land-for-sale-texas.com/I bet this question about desert vs woods vs mountains has already been asked.

First off, welcome to the forum FGL...Now to answer our question, while the price sounds nice, it probably isn't the best location if it is desert land...I checked out the website and noted the limited amount of rainfall that area gets. Obviously, a continuous and reliable source of water would be necessary and I'm not sure you have that with these properties. And as you pointed out, there isn't much wildlife around to hunt for food, and not many trees to utilize for fire. So it doesn't meet my criteria for a sustainable bug out location.
In my opinion, you need land that:
- has a reliable source of water - has trees and vegitation for fire/shelter - has wildlife for hunting and trapping - decent soil for gardening
Again, welcome to the forum and look forward to your future posts.

Again, welcome to the forum and look forward to your future posts. Thanks. Do they grow much in a place like Wyoming? Seems more like ranch land, but if they grow grass I'd assume you could grow a garden. Oklahoma is closer and I have been there before. Water is probably not that deep underground and there are a lot lakes, ponds and such. More trees than Wyoming too, from the photo's I have seen of Wy. But Oklahoma is closer to population centers. I just hope SHTF doesn't happen until I can get the money to buy the land and stockpile some supplies. Does anyone on this board have underground shelters they use for storing bulk food? I would think that was pretty common for the rural residents.

Greetings to All. I have just discovered this web-site so I am not entirely sure how this "posting" of messages works; please forgive me if I trample on anyone's messages. Let me begin with a brief personal history of myself; followed by my interest in this site. I am a thirty-nine year old male with a varied professional past. I served eight years in the United States Marine Corps, from 1988-1996. I spent my first four-year tour in the Infantry, MOS 0331/Heavy-Machinegunner and Team-Leader, and was on the ground during the Persian Gulf War. (I was "in country" much longer than was reported on CNN). After I re-enlisted I requested, and was granted, testing for the Marine Force Recon unit at Camp Pendleton, California. I passed the indoctrination with outstanding scores and was waiting for confirmation/assignment when I was approached by the "Brass" and offered a rather unigue Billet (Posting/Duty Station). I was offered the billet of a Marine Cadre/MOS 8153. A Marine Cadre is a little-known assignment in the Marine Corps; there are only 85-90 such Marines active within the Corps at any given time and they are stationed on Navy Bases around the Continental United States (and it's territories). A Marine Cadre is an Instructor. Without listing every subject that we have mastered, we are specialists in Anti-Terrorism and Physical Security. It was during my four years as a Marine Cadre that my eyes were opened to the political, religious, and ideological threats that surround each and every one of us on a daily basis. It was then that I began to prepare for the inevitable... (I have run out of space for this posting...will continue with next posting...)

Continuation of Last Post...
The current economic and political climate that we are experiencing at his time is going to take a turn for the worse in the near future. Our new "President" is shaping up to be the catalyst for that turn. Aside from being an egomaniacal elitist, he is pursuing a socialist agenda; and he is doing so against the majority vote. (For instance; more than 60% of the registered voters in this country are content with the current healthcare system, yet he continues to push for a government-controlled system). There are many other disturbing concerns linked to the Obama Administration and I will get to them in the future, but for now, I will move on. China, North Korea, and the Religious Extremists in the Middle East are our immediate concern. These countries, and elements within, either have Nuclear Capabilities or access to Nuclear Weapons. The threat of a terrorist cell smuggling a nuclear device into this country is very possible...and extremely probable! Current safeguards and border protection elements are inadequate to prevent this probability, let alone any other type of destructive action. It is because of these possible threats that we must all begin preparation for the inevitable. We must prepare for our survival...and we must prepare now! It is because of my experience and knowledge that I have joined this web-site. Although I have a great deal of knowledge in these matters, I am not omniscient. I am lacking in many areas of survival and hope to learn as much as possible by communicating with others on this site. I hope we can learn from each other before it is too late.

Welcome to both FGL and Shogun! It looks as though you have much insight to offer here at the forum. Looking forward to learning from and with you both.
