We have some friends trying to start their own Urban Homesteading lifestyle, and are trying to figure out what livestock they should try to get past the city council.
Personally, I would first get animals currently allowed, set a good track record, meaning going for about a year without any complaints, then try to get the easement, or whatever it's called, from the council.
Do you think this is a better idea than trying to get permission before building a good track record.

Chickens - Popular Mechanics has a survival and sustainability issue this month (Sept 2009) and shows how to build a small chicken coop. It looks like a very reasonable way to get eggs and protein.
