A knife is the best tool in the wilderness hands down... but if you think about it.. each household in an urban environment usually has more knives then people so they're not exactly a valuable item. A crowbar on the other hand is somewhat rare, and conducive to solving the problems often faced in an urban disaster. It can be used to clear out rubble, Break open doors and getting past locks, it can be used as a weapon and prying off wood for your fire.

What do you think? What is the ultimate urban survival tool?

Yes, I agree that crowbars are the best tools in urban survival. I would also prefer a plier along with a crowbar. Pliers can be useful for making minute adjustments and also an effective short range weapon.

I prefer a Hatchet. Good for chopping wood, hammering in tent stakes, opening doors, etc. I have a Gerber Gator Combo Axe II. It comes with a small saw in the handle.

Yes, the best tool to survive is the knife I think, too. But a sword is also good in some extreme situatuion ;)

I would have to agree with Jack that a hatchet would be a great survival tool. It has more functions that just a knife.

I used to have this big army knife you could screw off the top of it. Inside their were different things such as matches and a fish hook and line. This ranks as one of my ultimate survival tools.

I'd suggest that a fixed blade knife (either my ka-bar or my SOG Seal Pup Elite) or my firesteel would be the most valuable tools to have.

I like to have 2 items with me. They are a mini halligan and a flat head axe when used together the possibilities are endless.

The tomahawk is a wonderful instrument as is the Halligan tool.

Here's an article from Cold Steel about the use of a tomahawk:

One thing you have to consider in your urban environment is the potential for encountering LEO and in Texas, carrying a Hawk will put you in the pokey. A Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel is just as good as a Hawk and it passes the LEO smell test in a traffic stop.
