1. Actively seek new employment in a safer area.
2. Drive a reliable, well maintained, bling-free, unattractive, non-luxury car or truck. (Would a hoodlum enjoy driving your car? But, don't convey weakness either. No stuffed animals in the back window. Also, don't have such a crappy vehicle that the cops stop you thinking you are a crackhead.)
3. Always fill up in a safe neighborhood during the daylight when you reach 1/4 of a tank.
4. Do not wear jewelry, watches, or any visible signs of wealth.
5. Go directly to your car and drive (as previously mentioned doors locked etc.)
6. Do not stop right on the bumper of the car ahead of you. Leave 1/2 car length ahead to maneuver your vehicle.
7. As you travel look ahead to intersection and scan for hoodlums.
a. If hoodlum present, can you time your arrival at light so that it is green.
b. If hoodlum present and light red, can you make an immediate right on red to avoid stopping.
8. If traffic is light, all traffic laws are optional in the presence of hoodlums.
9. While stopped, what are your escape routes? Can you drive up on sidewalk if needed?
10. Are you being followed? Be absolutely sure before you get home. If you suspect you are being followed, drive to a police station rather than to you home.
11. Have 911 on speed dial.
12. Have enough window tinting to disguise your race at night time.

It's all a balancing act, but I hope these tips give you some thoughts.
