If you haven't tried it out yet, I highly reccomend it.

Originally developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, Swedish FireSteel is a flash of genius. Its 3,000°C spark makes fire building easy in any weather, at any altitude. Used by a number of armies around the world, Swedish FireSteel's dependability has already made it a favorite of survival experts, hunters, fishermen and campers.

I've got both the firesteel and the blastmatch in my kit. Both are extremely easy to use and reliable. I probably don't need to carry both, but I like to have some backups/options. Never want to be caught unprepared without at least one of those options.

I also wanted to point out how easy the Firesteel is to use...

Operating Instructions from the http://www.lightmyfire.com website:

1. Take a small quantity of dry grass, Maya Dust, paper or any other inflammable material. Build them up into a pile.
2. Grip the FireSteel with one hand, Take hold of the striker with the other hand, Position the striker against the FireSteel
3. Forcing the striker "slowly down" with the thumb of hand holding the FireSteel

Works like a charm...everytime!

I'm just starting out and begining to put together my first kit. The firesteel will be one of my first purchases. It seems so easy to use and reliable. Can't wait to test it out at home.

I had used this before. It is the best and classic stainless steel product I had ever seen. Swedish people are indeed skilled metal workers and their steel products especially the knife is famous all over the world.

I use the Swedish fire-steel all the time to light my camp stove and also to light my barbecue grill at home. If you plan to start a campfire with it, I'd encourage you to practice a few times before you really need it. The fire-steel does throw out a lot of hot sparks, but that's not quite the same as holding a match to paper. Catching a spark is definitely a learned skill.

As our buddy cmlesq always says, "If its in your pack and you don't know how to use it, its useless." There is no substitute for experience.

Just my 2 cents worth.
