The promo looked interesting for a new weekly survival series (Tues 10pm and 11pm, Spike channel).
Premise -- Each week Navy SEAL Cade Courtley goes through surviving a different disaster scenario. 1st episode 9/1: fighting terrorists in a simulated aircraft hijacking. 2nd episode 9/8: how to escape a burning inferno. 3rd episode 9/15: unkown at this time.
If you record "The Colony" at 10pm, set your recorder to catch "Surviving Disaster" at 11pm.

Haven't watched this series yet. Any reviews of the first episode?

I watched the first one. They did have some good tips about subduing the hi jackers. The only issue I have with it is there are so few people that would be willing to help, that it would be hard to use a coordinated attack as they did in the show.
The only issue I had was when they breached the cockpit door. The way these doors are reinforced since 9/11, I don't think a drink cart pushed by 2 or 3 guys would really be effective. I don't know what they do have on these airliners that could be used, though. I haven't flown on an airliner since the early 90's.
I really liked the first aid tips they gave. They showed how to treat a sucking chest wound without real medical equipment. It was in line with what I was taught back in the Army days, but showed more detail on common items that could be used to let air out of the chest cavity while keeping it from going back in.
Overall I would give it a B.

I think the second show dealing with evacuating a high-rise fire was actually better. Good tips on only using designated evac stairwells (pressurized to minimize smoke infiltration), not using elevators, using clothing as smoke/fire inhibitors, marking your egress routes with direction of travel in case you need to backtrack, prepping an adhoc BOB with items on hand, making new pathways through drywall dividers if forward/backward paths becomes blocked, how to treat burn injuries, using your cellphone to text messages to outside parties on a continual basis, taking pictures of floorplan layouts posted near elevators with a cellphone for on-hand reference use, how to use back of hand to verifying if the other side of doors are hot (in others words don't get your palms burnt or your hands are worthless for grabbing), staying low to the ground as much as possible to avoid smoke/chemical residue, how to use cat-5 ethernet cables as a makeshift rope/sling setup and a table across doorway as an anchor point, assigning specific tasks to each member of the escape group (pointman, marker, texter, floor layout guy etc, etc), how low you need to get (70-100ft) before you can use the firecrews jump air-bag, etc, etc. Too many things to list or remember off-hand, but thought many were good overall strategies for evacuating a building fire.
I'm actually looking forward to the Hurricane show next week. Could be a good series if they don't get into sensationalism for ratings sake.
