Hi Everyone,
I'm a sophomore at the University of Delaware. I'm working to revolutionize the world of emergency management. I think there's a lot of room for improvement, but a lot of time and effort will be required to identify the weakest areas of the field and possible solutions. I'm also very interested in camping and wilderness survival. My confidence lies in my will power. It's a pleasure to be a part of this forum. I'm looking forward to joining some very interesting and insightful discussions.

Welcome!

Please do participate in the discussions. With your education in emergency management, I am sure all of us here could learn a thing or two from you.

Sounds like a worthy goal. Keep one thing in mind, that I've found to be true in emergency situations as well as normal, 'mangerial' situations. Despite the term, you are not going to 'manage' the emergency. You are going to have to deal with it on its natural terms, and deal with the response of a wide variety of people to the emergency. Management is a modern buzz word, that to me, is misleading. It makes it sound like you can get the emergency (or other situation) to follow specific rules to make it easier. The emergency won't. People reacting to it, in large part, won't. I'm a believer in leadership of people, rather than management. And having a deep knowledge base of emergencies will allow you to deal with their effects, not manage them away. Sounds harsh, and probably is. I have a thing about modern buzz words.

So get in there, learn everything you can about real emergency preparedness on the individual level, and you'll be able to see what I mean, and, I believe, become a better Emergency Management person, which will include teaching what you learned so people will do the appropriate thing when an emergency happens and you won't have to try to 'manage' them.

Just some thoughts from someone that's been dealing with emergencies and emergency preparedness since 1967 and had the first taste of it as a child during the Cuban Missile crisis and numerable tornadoes in that same time frame.

I wouldn't think of arguing with that. I fully agree that management is a deceptive term. I've come to learn that we can only control ourselves and to try to control things outside of that can lead to frustration, disappointment and mistakes. If I can find a fully functional calm in the face of disaster, be a good leader, and do my part to improve our current means of preparing for, dealing with and/or cleaning up after disasters, I'll have achieved all the management I could have wished for.
Thanks for the warm welcome, I'll see everyone in the real threads.

A little late, but welcome! I've been offline for most of the weekend and haven't had a chance to check in so a bit of catching up to do.
