So, anyone here have a decent surplus of ammunition at home, should the worst occur? I myself have around 2k rounds, of which about 800 is .223, and 700 is .45. What about everyone else?

My husband just told me that his "stockpile" is around 1,500 bullets, mostly for his pistol (9mm), and his rifle (30-06).
We are a shooting and hunting family though, and we tend to burn up around 300 rounds per range trip, on average.

Another .223 supporter here (around 800 rounds for the rifle), and .40 S&W shooter (around 350 or so for my pistol). I'd rather have more ammunition than that, but I guess that's enough for now (ammunition's expensive nowadays!).

stocking up on ammo is absolutely necessary! It may well be currency when needed. If (when) it all hits the fan we will see that those who have prepared will survive and those that haven't may not and they will steal (and worse) to get what they want. You must be prepared to protect your supplies to feed and protect your family. Extra ammo, if any, will be very valuable for trading when cash is of no value... I've got plenty!

I keep stocked up on ammo as well. I also reload my own ammo. The only ammo I buy exclusively is 22LR. I keep about 5,000 rounds of it on hand. Everything else I keep about 500 rounds for each gun ready to go, and keep the supplies to reload about 5,000 rounds for each caliber. I keep all of my supplies and ammo in surplus ammo cans that are easy to grab and take with me if I would have to bug out.

Another 22LR fan here- with the right shot placement, it can take down deer and other species. While I wouldn't want to use it for self defense, it certainly is the little rimfire cartridge that could!

I reload for my 30-30, my 9mm, and my .308 m1a. All together, I have about 3,000 rounds. When you reload, it pays to do reloads in large batches- that way you won't have to reload as often.

The majority of my ammo stockpile is for the firearms that I own - 3000 rounds of .22, 3000 rounds of .40 SW, 3000 9 mm, 1500 rounds of 12 gauge, and 1000 .308. The rest of my stockpile consists of .223, .38, .357, .45 for trading or if I happen to come across a weapon in those calibers. I use some of my stockpile for target practice and replace those rounds as I use them. That way my stockpile stays fresh.
Most of my ammo is for self defense purposes. I use a bow and a crossbow (when the law allows) for hunting.

Most of my ammo is for self defense purposes. I use a bow and a crossbow (when the law allows) for hunting. I would be careful about trading ammo and alcohol if SHTF. You just may be giving someone the ammo they need to come back and rob and kill you. You are right about using your stockpile for practice and then replacing it. I rotate my ammo also, If I was you I would sell the ammo in calibers that i have no guns for and use it to buy ammo I need, or other stores that may need more stock.

True you have to be careful who you trade ammo with in a SHTF situation, and I am not one to trade or sell to just anybody. The ammo serves two purposes, primarily to have a small supply available should I come across a weapon in that caliber. this may seem out there but my experiences tell me this is a prudent move.
