We're thinking about getting some chickens and laying hens this spring. Does anyone have any or know of any good resources on chickens? We have borrowed "Barnyard in your Backyard" from the library a couple of times but other than that, we're clueless.

I would love to keep chickens but don't know much about it either. I think my husband believes I would become too attached to them and want to raise the eggs, rather than eat them.

I used to work for a farmer who had them. Make sure they have a lot of room, a whole shed to themselves, and if you are going to collect eggs from them, feed them twice a day, and have a nest set up for each hen, the rooster will roam where he pleases, but someone will have to manage the hens a few times a day, to make sure eggs are not being stepped on, or destroyed in other ways.

Keep the gate to the chicken house closed when not watching them. Dogs and foxes alike love the infamous sport of chicken hunting.

You could possibly invest in one of those boneless chickens, I don't know how to grow one myself, but it might require a quarantined area, like a laboratory. Just Kidding everyone.

We have chickens in our garden and the eggs are really awesome. Much better the store bought eggs.

Something to remember....
Someone laughed when I mentioned foxes on another website, but foxes live in cities. I have seen more than one near my home and we are basically downtown.
If you want to keep those chickens be sure city foxes can't get to them!

Our house is well fenced so we don't have any problems with any animals killing our chicken. Street dogs also like to kills chickens so be aware of them as well!
