We are in the process of starting a garden for veggies using the black buckets that plants usually come in. I am disabled so I can`t be bending over to weed and stuff. My hubby is building me a plywood platform to put the buckets on. I have all my seeds. Just have to wait for him to finish the platform. Anyone else ever do this? Did it work good?

I think it sounds good. We had growing plants in black buckets for about 3 months now and never had a problem with it. However you have to make sure that you maintain optimum amount of moisture in the buckets. Other than that there is nothing to worry about in growing these vegetables.

Once you get set up, post pictures of your project. I think this will benefit many people.

one of the problems we had with bucket gardens, was the moisture control. Roots at the bototm tended to have rot easily even with holes and rock and aerator ports.
We switched to large gallon buckets and watered using pop bottles inserted to the plants didnt get over watered.

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing. Using the plastic liter bottles to water with. I keep hearing a lot about that. I still need to start. lol. I am such a procrastinator.

Could some one explain the watering with plastic water bottles to me? I don't understand what you are talking about.

I was wondering if that is why my cucumbers died on me---to much water?

I did a bit of research and think I found some information on the plastic bottle watering system. I've posted it under a new thread here: http://www.emergencypreparationforum.com/make-your-own-plastic-bottle-irrigation-system-968.html
