Anyone into building snow caves? I had a friend once that swore that no matter how cold it was outside, a snow cave would keep you warm! He said that properly built, they usually are just below freezing inside, and get quite comfortable with more than one person. Anyone else tried this? I'm tempted to camp in the mountains (obviously near my vehicle in case it doesn't work as advertised) to give this a shot!

I've done it before in the Beartooth mountains. It's fairly simple, find a large snow drift, dig a 4' hole, and make a cave out of it. If you want it a little warmer inside (not too warm, or else you'll get wet and miserable), you can light a single candle. They can be warm compared to the outside temperature, more or less just below freezing.

It is easy to make a snow cave. You just need to have a clear plan and some dug out skills. And make sure everything is done correctly as there is a high possibility that it may collapse if done improperly.

If your going to be doing it for the first time, I would suggest a simple precation. Tie a rope to a tree out side and and leave a lead line next to you when you sleep. If there is a cave-in you can easily orient your self to the fastest route to dig out, plus it will give you something to anchor onto as you dig. Have fun!

I did have a mountain survival course a few years back and my instructor did teach us about snow caving. Eskimos have done this for centuries.

Never hurts to be prepared!

Never hurts to be prepared! That's what I like about this place- just when you thought you knew it all, someone comes along with some different way to do something that makes sense! A leader line is what I'll be using for now on- better safe than sorry.

I want to go snow caving/camping, but there isn't enough snow yet! We're having a pretty wimpy winter here.

We don't get that kind of snow. It sounds intriguing.
Do you dig it out for the shelter, or do you pile it up and make a roof?
