Date: 2010-03-08

Here is the latest major earthquake to strike:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/03/08/turkey.earthquake/index.html?hpt=T2

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- A pre-dawn earthquake collapsed homes and killed more than 50 people in a mountainous region of southeastern Turkey Monday, government officials said.

About 71 others were injured when the earthquake struck at 4:32 a.m., according to officials. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake at magnitude 5.9, while the Turkish earthquake monitoring center listed it as a 6.0.

The quake struck in Elazig province, with the village of Okcular the worst hit, according to Ozcan Yalcin, the press secretary for the province's governor. Most of the mud brick homes in the village were destroyed, he said. Villagers had buried 15 of the people that died, he added.

"The people are sad but they are calm," Yalcin said. "They lost relatives and loved ones, they are crying, but all of their needs are being met by the state."

The quake killed 51 people, the office of the Prime Minister and Crisis Center in Elazig province said. The death toll revises an earlier report by Turkey Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek that at least 57 people had died. There was no further detail on the discrepancy.

Dozens of aftershocks, ranging up to magnitude 5.5, shook the region in the hours after the quake.

"According to the information that we got from the technical teams on the ground, there shouldn't be anyone left in the rubble by now. But the search and rescue operations are continuing," said the deputy governor of Elazig, Mehmet Ali Saglam.

"Most of the houses that were demolished in the villages are not cement houses. ... Other buildings, such as schools, were not destroyed," the deputy governor said.

"The Red Crescent is there. They are giving all kinds of help to the people. They are setting up tents. The weather is cloudy, 8 to 10 degrees Celsius (46 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit)."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on television said: "Teams from the state mass housing project have also been sent to the area to study how to rebuild the area in different methods."

Monday's quake occurred near the meeting point of two major fault lines, geologists said.

The Northern Anatolian Fault and East Anatolian Fault juxtapose each other, in an area where other fault lines exist, said Okan Tuysuz, a professor of geology at Istanbul Technical University.

"The Anatolian plate, which is surrounded by these two different fault systems, moves every year 2.5 centimeters westwards," Tuysuz said. "And the movement of the Anatolian plate westwards creates different fault systems in this area. And the earthquake occurred in such a complex geological environment."

Turkey is periodically pummeled by deadly earthquakes. In 1999, two powerful earthquakes hit heavily populated areas near Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, killing at least 20,000 people.

	Date: 2010-03-05

With limited hauling capability, even with vehicles, I think the best barter items are food items. Dried foods are light and if packed properly won't take much space. Those who didn't prep will need food. Plus, if you don't end up bartering any away, you will always have it for your own use.

	Date: 2010-03-04

I've lucked out twice in the last couple of months and found really good deals on Hand Crank Radios. The first crank radio that I got had an integrated flashlight and siren. It was sold under the WeatherX brand and I got it for only $5 at a Goodwill thriftstore up in Georgia.

My second handcrank radio was available at CVS for only $10. It is marketed under the name Innovage Outdoor and has AM/FM and a weatherband. Although it can run off of batteries, it is called the Innovage Outdoor Battery Free Crank Radio. For more information, here is my review: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2745751/emergency_radio_review_battery_free.html?cat=15

I'm thinking that other handcrank equipment would be very cool to have.

Those would be valuable in a barter situation but wouldn't pose the "liquid courage" threat.

	Date: 2010-03-04

I understand why people want goods they can barter. Alcohol is not one commodity I would be willing to, along with guns and ammo.

Most people you will be dealing with, you don't know at all. Therefore, I would never barter away anything that could be turned against me like guns and ammo can. I also would not want to give someone I didn't know alcohol, AKA in these parts as liquid courage. Some people turn into totally different people when they drink. The nicest guy on Earth can become a real blood thirsty SOB. I will not take my chances that someone drinking liquid courage that they got from me, would get drunk and come back and try to take my preps, assault me and my family, or just cause trouble. If SHTF I will have enough trouble without all of this to worry about.

Once I get me food stocks back up, I will get extra 50 lb bags of dried beans and rice to use as barter, along with meat that I have hunted that I may not be able to use before it spoils. In a SHTF situation, I think there is more trading power in food anyhow.

	Date: 2010-03-04

Looks like Quake (rather appropriate user name) beat me to the punch with info on the Taiwan earthquake. In fact Quake posted this very quickly...only ten minutes after it was posted on CNN.com. Nice job on that one.

In any event, here are some updates:

Aftershocks ripple through Taiwan

(CNN) -- Aftershocks rattled southern Taiwan in the hours after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook the island, but left it relatively unscathed.

Thursday morning's quake was followed by more than 15 aftershocks, the largest reaching 4.8.

Taiwan's interior ministry reported 12 minor injuries -- nine in Kaohsiung county, two in Jia Yi county and one in Tainan county.

The quake struck about 8:20 a.m. (7:20 p.m. Wednesday ET) in a mountainous region about 25 miles northwest of Taitung, on the southeast coast, and 40 miles east of Tainan and Kaohsiung on the southwest coast.

The region includes Taiwan's Maolin National Scenic Area and is still recovering from a direct hit by Typhoon Morakot that killed hundreds in August. The typhoon dumped more than two feet of rain, causing serious mudslides in the south, including one that buried the village of Shiao Lin under 50 feet of mud.

Shuo Hong, an orthopedic surgeon in Taipei, about 155 miles away from the epicenter, felt the earthquake during a meeting at a hospital. "We were debating whether or not to run for shelter, but the hospital is safe," he said "It is built to resist a 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

"It was shaking for about 20 to 30 seconds, shaking more than what we expected," Hong said.

The Taiwan Ministry of Interior and the National Fire Agency said electricity was cut off in parts of Kaohsiung county, Jia Yi city and Jia Yi county. Taiwan's official news agency reported that a fire broke out in Jia Yi city.

Residents in southern Taiwan reported cracks in some buildings and major bridges. Train service was also disrupted in some areas, Taiwanese media reported.

Two small hotels near the epicenter that were contacted by CNN reported no damage, though the buildings shook for a few seconds during the quake.

Albert Yu, communications manager of the humanitarian organization World Vision, told CNN he was about half-way through a 90-minute trip via high-speed train from Taipei to Tainan when the quake struck. Passengers did not feel the quake, he said, but operators stopped the train and announced what had happened before inspecting the tracks for stability.

During the delay, Yu said people were calm, "opening laptops ... and chatting with people around them."

Yu said World Vision "has already been on high alert responding to the quakes in Haiti and Chile, so we're closely monitoring reports in the earthquake in southern Taiwan."

Residents in Taipei, the capital, also felt the shaking.

Earthquakes are far from uncommon on the nearly 14,000-square-mile island -- about the size of the U.S. states of Maryland and Delaware combined -- which sits across the juncture of the Eurasian and Philippine tectonic plates.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the same general region in December. The island took a double hit on December 26, 2006, when earthquakes of 7.1 and 6.9 magnitude hit eight minutes apart.

The largest recorded quake to strike Taiwan was an 8.0-magnitude quake in 1920, but the worst earthquake disaster stemmed from a 7.1-magnitude quake in 1935 that killed more than 3,200 people -- followed by a 6.5-magnitude quake that killed more than 2,700 people three months later.

More recently, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,400 people in 1999.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/04/taiwan.earthquake/index.html?hpt=T2

	Forum: General Preparation Discussion
Date: 2010-03-02

Hey Mike, Where are you from? I have had no issues finding most powders around here. I have been having trouble getting primers and affordable bullets. Most of the shops around here regularly stock powder in 8lb kegs, and that is the only way I buy it. I admit I am lucky to live close to Camp Perry, and I get most of my powder when the matches are winding down. Last summer I got an 8 lb keg of varget for $119, and an 8 lb keg of Titegroup for $89. Now these prices are lowered a little because the vendors don't want to haul everything home, but I think they are great. I do this every year for whatever powder I need.

These two powders cover everything I reload right now, so they are all I am stocking. For your 9MM carbine, or pistol rounds, you can even try shotgun powder. Universal Clays seemsa to work very well for them and is very inexpensive. I have some friends that swear by it because they load their shotgun shells with it also.

Another option for getting powder is mail order off the internet. Many places charge one shipping and hazardous material fee for up to a certain amount. If you choose wisely, you can get a lot of powder at a good price in this manner. I know people who buy theirs this way. Like I said, I get a bunch every year at Camp Perry and stock it in case I need it.

I try to keep enough supplies on hand to load 5,000 rounds per caliber, per gun, as I have multiple guns that take the same rounds. I also keep 1,000 rounds per caliber, per gun ready to go at all times. If I decide to go to a shoot or class where I will need a lot of ammo, I normally don't have to rush to load some up so I can go. When I do reaload, I use my stock, rotating it as I go, and then buy to replace it. This keeps me going when I need ammo for a shoot, and I am well prepared for a SHTF scenario also.

If you need more info on locating powder, let me know. I will see what I can find for you.

Maybe it has something to do with this weather and geologic activity.

Actually I think all of this snow is just because the Earth is in a natural cooling cycle. I guess we will find out.

As far as volcanos and that stuff goes, throughout the history of the Earth, volcanic areas have become active and then gone dormant. Different areas are just becoming active. I am not reading any of this into anything. We need to prep for anything that can come our way, not just prepare for one thing and then get blindsided by another.

I try to keep everything equal across the board with less emphasis on meat, since I have the skills and tools to hunt my meat. In a situation like this, I would be trying to bolster what I already have and still maintain the balance that I think meets my needs.

That's the reason for my choices.
I could take care of my meat, produce, and dairy needs. Date: 2010-03-01

DW and I had a conversation about the apparent increase in geologic activity. Until recently, I attributed it to a more complete and immediate availability of information. I'm not so sure anymore. The "ring of fire" does seem to be more active. So maybe the earth is getting ready to make some major shifts of the land masses. While not immune from the shaking, we are in a relatively stable geologic area. I'm more concerned about what the politicians are going to do to us.
The snow; not so much. We here in the east can figure on an exceptionally snowy winter every 8-10 years. I've been plowing snow for nearly 20 years. This past summer was cool and wet just like it was in '95 and '02. Heavy winter snows seem to follow a cool wet summer. If the pattern that I've come to notice follows through again, I expect to see a hot dry summer for '10. I'll be sure to have my rainwater system in top shape this spring to catch and store all the rainwater I can.

Reloading - thoughts on powder selection

	Author: Groovy Mike
Forum: General Preparation Discussion
Date: 2010-03-01

More reflections on reloading –

Now that powder is hard to find and double the cost it was when I started reloading, I am thinking a little harder about my reloading options.

Once you decide that you are in the reloading hobby for the long term you quit buying your primers buy the 100 pack and save a few dollars by buying primers by the 1,000 count “brick” (ten packs of 100). Bullet casters making their own projectiles from lead buy gas checks in 1,000 count packages. Jacketed projectiles are often bought in bulk by the 500 count box, or sometimes 1,000 count packages. But powder is usually bought in one pound increments or at most the increasingly rare 8 pound kegs. The end result is that reloaders often have several thousand primers, gas checks, and projectiles on hand. Which when combined with the re-useable brass from their cartridges produce loads ready to be fired again with the exception of powder.

Lately – gun shops don’t even have powder on hand let alone at reasonable prices. While I have been waiting for the prices to settle back into the reasonable level I have loaded myself nearly out of much of my powder reserve. When powder is up to $30 a pound I need to be choosey about what I buy.

To better plan ahead let’s take a look at what we need on hand to make use of the materials on hand. As with all things related to reloading, consult your reloading manuals and start at the book minimum load. The following is based on the powders and loads that I use and will differ slightly from the powder charges appropriate for the loads you develop for your rifles.

A pound of powder weighs 7,000 grains. A 70 grain big game load of a slow burning powder uses up a pound of powder with just 100 cartridges.

My 308 load for hunting mid sized game calls for 43.5 grains of a popular powder with a moderate burn rate. That uses powder at rate of 160 cartridges per pound. So loading 1,000 cartridges would require storing 6.25 lbs of powder.

My 7.62x39 load calls for about half that amount of powder. A 20 grain charge lets me fill 350 cartridges before using a pound of powder. That means that less than 3 pounds of powder are needed to load a full thousand cartridges.

You can see the trend. If you are storing reloading supplies for a time when resupply may not be an option – you are far better off to use smaller amount of faster burning powder if it will meet your needs for hunting and defense.

In my case, the +/- 100 yard ranges that I hunt at are equally well served by 7.62x39, 308, or 30-06; so I would be well served to save my primers for reloading 7.62x39 because the same amount of powder will give me almost twice as many shots.

Similarly my load for my 9mm carbine with fast burning handgun powder calls for just 4 grains of powder. In this case – the same $30 could by a pound of slow burning rifle powder to fill just 100 375 H&H cartridges, or a full 1,750 9mm cartridges. There are times when NEED a 375 H&H, but use your resources wisely 1,750 shots vs. just 100 is quite a difference. So if you are reloading for plinking or hunting small – mid sized game – you probably want to avoid the big bores.

With limited resources to spend, and limited capacity to legally store smokeless powder – I will be giving preference to powders that deliver more per pound than their equally expensive cousins. The first pound in storage will be for my 9mm load. It will serve for self defense and close range (under 100 yard) survival hunting. The next pound will be suitable for 7.62x39 for the same reasons in preference to the 308 load. Only after that will any consideration be given for storing the powders for the big bores.

YMMMV (your mileage may vary) but you may want to consider a similar analysis before stocking up on powder.

	Date: 2010-02-28

Interesting how after several replies there is little if any overlap in what people would choose.

I think the lack of overlap may be due to people having different priorities in their preps. I try to keep everything equal across the board with less emphasis on meat, since I have the skills and tools to hunt my meat. In a situation like this, I would be trying to bolster what I already have and still maintain the balance that I think meets my needs.

I do not think anyone who does it differently is wrong. We all live in different areas which means different resources available. Everyone also has different needs, so we all have to plan according to what is available at home, what is available at our planned bug out location(s), our skill sets, and any special needs.

	Date: 2010-02-28

Flashlights and batteries I'm OK on. I have a case of batteries for the flashlights and radios, plus several sets of rechargeable that I have house and solar chargers for.

I don't have any flares. I never really used them anyhow.

As far as the camping gear and the stuff in my BOB goes, it is still intact and I have all of it here. I do need to get some more containers for water and fuel storage as they were left behind. She can use them and it will probably be easier to replace then go through all of the work to remove them. They are attached to racks I built in the garage.

First Aid stuff I will need to work on again, and I have replaced some of the basics that I keep separate from my standard kit. I am going to have to get one of my daughters to get my puncture wound plugs. That could be a little embarrassing. Right now I am light here, but what I have is workable. I will slowly build this stock back up along with my food stores.

Hand tools are no problem. I was a mechanic and I am still certified, even though I don't work that job any more. I have enough tools to rebuild most anything. I was able to set her up with a basic house hold set without even putting a ding in that stock. I also have other tools that I brought with me that are more survival related, but just stay put in case they are really needed.

It could have been much worse than it was. She could have taken more legally. It was basically we agreed that she keeps the food (the only survival prepping she actually agrees with), and I get to keep everything else. I did leave her with enough flash lights, emergency lights and batteries to run them for a week or two, along with what was in her BOB I put together for her. She may not use it, but it is there if she needs it.

I also got to keep the generator, so my bug in situation won't change much, except for the fact that the house I got in the settlement, (We also had a rental property, which I moved into) is less defensible than the other one. I am still working on modifying my plans and tactics I am training for a bug in situation to match what I now have to work with.

I did find one really neat feature in this house That's caused by the way the roof lines run. In Between a walk in closet and the upstairs bathroom I found an interior dead space that is about 24 inches deep, 48 inches wide, and about 55 inches tall at its highest point, and about 36 inches tall at the lowest. I am building a hidden gun and valuable vault that will be impossible to find if you don't know it is there. I work with electronics, so I am working on a a lock system that I can hook up to an alarm key pad that will allow me to have it securely locked without giving away the location. This will be set up with a battery backup feature so I can use it if the power fails. If I plan accordingly, I should be able to store all of my guns along with some of my more valuable items and gear in there.
