Survival Kits - Everything You Need To Know When an emergency strikes, you need to be prepared in order to protect and provide for yourself. Here's a guide to building a complete survival kit (a/k/a "bug out bag") for you or your family. A survival kit or bug out bag is arguably the most important piece of your emergency preparation. If an emergency or disaster strikes, you may be forced to stop and leave your present location at a moments notice. With that in mind, I recommend that you keep a survival kit in your vehicle so you will be prepared in the event that you need to "bug out" in a hurry. Here's a breakdown of what I keep in my survival kit or bug out bag. This bag is kept in my car and will help sustain me for more than 72 hours if need be. Certain items are more important that others, and I've tried to point out the items that are essential and those that are beneficial to have but not as necessary.
United States Military Survival Manual FM 21-76-1, (which has been renumbered under the latest U.S. Military Field Manual numbering system to FM 3-05.70). This is the The latest updated and revised version of the manual. As a soldier, you can be sent to any area of the world. It may be in a temperate, tropical, arctic, or subarctic region. You expect to have all your personal equipment and your unit members with you wherever you go. However, there is no guarantee it will be so. You could find yourself alone in a remote area—possibly enemy territory—with little or no personal gear. This manual provides information and describes basic techniques that will enable you to survive and return alive should you find yourself in such a situation.
This is a 204-page In-depth guide to citizen preparedness published by FEMA in 2004. The guide has been designed to help the citizens of this nation learn how to protect themselves and their families against all types of hazards. It can be used as a reference source or as a step-by-step manual. The focus of the content is on how to develop, practice, and maintain emergency plans that reflect what must be done before, during, and after a disaster to protect people and their property. Also included is information on how to assemble a disaster supplies kit that contains the food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity for individuals and their families to survive following a disaster in the event they must rely on their own resources.
Emergency Services Manual By LDS Be advised that this manual is created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and does have some religious undertones to it. However, the 86 page document does a nice job covering family preps, food storage (how to and how much per person) etc. The good info starts on page 26. |
