I want a backpack that isn't going to kill my back that bad on a hike. What does everyone else have that is back friendly? I'm looking for the pack to be able to handle up to 100 pounds (although I usually will have it at 25-50 lbs). Also, I'd rather not throw money away, so keep that in mind, too.

What does everyone else have?

Pretty sure you can't kill the MOLLE packs made by SDS (Specialty Defense Systems)...I use the MOLLE Assault pack...You can pick them up on ebay (used or new)...the used ones run around $25-$30...These bags are durable as hell...and made from the best quality materials...They are the packs currently issued to the US soldiers...Don't settle for a "MOLLE" style backpack made by anyone else...They're just not the same...Trust me...

I'm planning on buying an ALICE pack here pretty soon. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks!

I have this one, and I love it! I have a small frame, and it fits me perfectly.

I use a Surplus ALICE pack, along with a surplus web belt with suspenders, ammo pouches, canteens and such just like we used when I was on active duty. Make sure you get one with a frame and waist strap. It does make a huge difference.

How much did the surplus gear cost? I'm interested in getting something decent for cheap!

They're available online for around 50 dollars plus shipping:

I got mine at a local surplus store. It cost me less than $50 out the door.
If you have any Army/Navy surplus stores in your area, try them it will be cheaper and you can check to make sure the straps and stuff aren't worn out or broken. Once I get closer to being where i want to be with my other essentials, I am going to go and buy an extra set of straps in case I have one fail when I need it most.

I found this article that compares Alice packs with Molle packs. It even includes a nice video:

http://www.survivalboards.com/2010-06-26/molle-vs-alice-pack/

Both the Alice and Molle packs come in various sizes and models. Certain Alice packs are better than certain Molle packs, and certain Molle packs are better than certain Alice packs. In other words, whenever you're comparing packs, you should always be very specific and mention the size and model of the pack you are referring to.
