If you are setting up a wilderness trip what information do you have to research before you leave to have the safest possible experience?

The best time to practice any wilderness survival skills is to start a fire, shelter building or whatever is before you need them. Take some time to read all the information contained in the websites . You will learn how to take care of yourself and others when traveling in the wilderness.

First it's necessary to discuss about this issue amongst your friends and then take the apt decision for your trip, only when you feel that you are confident enough to undergo such a trip.

Wilderness trips must be preplanned because , we don't know what hardships we may be face at those places , so discuss with your family members , and make a list of the things that you need.

The basics are these:

1. Practice your skills (fire starting, shelter building, water purification, knife sharpening, using a compass, etc) at home before going on such a trip...

2. Tell your family about the trip and give them a time frame for your return so that if you're running late they can contact the authorities to send a search party out after you...

3. Don't go alone...Take at least one other person with you and don't split up during the trip...

4. Know your environment beforehand...get topographical maps and waterproof them and bring them with you...

5. Know what types of plants are in that environment and which ones are harmful to eat...

6. Know what kind of wildlife is present in that environment....

If you have a friend or relative that is more experienced, ask them for advice.

If you work together to have a practice trip . . . you can learn a lot.

Even doing a "backyard" day can be instructional. We packed for a day of hiking and a one night camp out. Then we walked around the block with our gear and came back to our own back yard. We set up camp and had a great day.

We also found out that we definitely had "holes" in our gear and our skills.

Then later, we went to the local state park, (with fishing license in hand) and did the same thing, but this time we fished and actually stayed overnight in one of the "tent" camping areas.

The kids had a blast.

First of all in any types of trips that you are going to make planning should be there. Without a proper plan you would put yourself in a mess. Perfect plan and the skills makes a trip great. All the people who are going for the trip must sit together and plan so that new ideas and fresh suggestions would be included.

Good job NightBloomer. These trips can be very fun and educational. I recommend not using any luxuries and use the gear and skills you would if you had to survive.
