So thanks to the long weekend (here in Mass it's Patriots Day) I had some extra time and finally got around to putting together my mini survival kit. It's inspired by the well-known Altoids tin survival kit, though the tin that I used is a bit larger than an Altoids tin.

Here are the contents of this kit:

- Folding razor blade knife
- Folding hack saw blade/serrated knife
- Pre-assembled fishing line (line, hook, weight, float) and extra line
- 6 feet of duct tape (folded)
- Various band-aids (10) in mylar baggie
- Magnifying lens
- Signal mirror
- Water purification tablets
- Whistle
- Swedish firesteel firestarter
- Tinder-Quik tinder tabs
- 10 Lumen Flashlight (super tiny and super bright)
- Mini pry bar/can opener
- Button compass
- Moisture absorbent packet

All of these items fit in the tin, which has a nice waterproof sealed lid. In order to further waterproof this kit, I put the kit in a resealable mylar bag before I put the kit the pouch. The pouch can be worn on a belt or attached to a pack using MOLLE straps or other clips. All in all, this little kit packs quite a few resources in a rather small space.

That kit is quite similar to the one that I carry when I'm on the trails. When I'm hiking I prefer to carry something on the small side like that rather than a big backpack full of gear. Overall, nice kit!

Hey there! Can you tell me where you got the pouch to carry your mini kit in? I'd really like to pick one of them up for myself. Thanks!

Cmlesq,

Nice kit. I discuss a lot of various kits that size in my book "Build the Perfect Survival Kit". Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

cmlesq,

Thanks for the offer. Yes, my web site shows under my signature; www.bepreparedtosurvive.com. My book can be puchased there (a signed copy), or it can be purchased at Amazon.com, or most book stores like Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc. It is the only book to date written exclusively on how to build a survival kit. Hopefully, some of our viewers here will find it interesting and helpful (It just went to its 3rd printing).

Ya know, I might just hafta make me one of those kits. I don't like carryin a big heavy pack, but I could get used to wearing somethin small like that on my belt. Thanks for the post and pics.

That's such a cool idea! One of my sons has a birthday coming and I think I'll make him a little kit like that for when he goes out with my husband. Can I ask how much the whole kit cost to put together?

I absolutely love the idea of this kit. I'd also like to know where to get the tin and pouch for the kit.
