I know there are a bunch of mushrooms that grow in the wild which may be good to eat or poisonous. However if we know the good ones we can rely on mushrooms for long, during critical times with no foods. Hence it is always best to know about the good mushrooms before going on a wild survival trip.

There must be some small pocket book available about mushrooms. You could carry a copy of it in your backpack.

Pine needles are also edible. Pokey but edible. I would advise against eating mushrooms in the wild, you might be a little too far away from a hospital to have your stomach pumped in case you happen to eat a very poisonous mushroom. On the other hand, if you eat an edible one, you must be the lucky one, or if you are a mycologist then you will be able to figure out where the grub is. :)

There are mushrooms that you can eat in the wilderness. I am sure that you can research the difference in mushrooms before you go and then you will be informed on what you can and can't eat.

Ever since I watched the news story about the Family (Grandma/Mom/grandkids etc) who made spaghetti using wild mushrooms and the kids and 1 of the adults died. These people were familiar with mushrooms and had picked them many times before but, this time they chose wrong. I just couldn't do it.

Friend of mine almost died doing this. Her liver was pretty badly messed up. Granted, she was going for 'shrooms, but hey- same basic idea.

Eating mushrooms is a recipe for disaster. Besides, mushrooms on an empty stomach will give you BAD gas! I wouldn't want to share a tent with someone who just ate a bunch of mushrooms!

Most people are concerned with whether a mushroom is edible or not. There are many poisonous mushrooms, and there are edible mushrooms. If you don't know the exact difference, you are really sick, or dead. But none of this should matter to a person trying to survive. Don't eat mushrooms. What most books don't explain is that mushrooms are thermogenic. In other words, they take more energy from the body to process, than you obtain from them. Therefore, you can literally starve yourself to death eating mushrooms (that is also why they are considered a diet food... you feel full but you gain nothing). IMHO, Do yourself a favor, find something else to eat.
