Most people are concerned with whether a mushroom is edible or not. There are many poisonous mushrooms, and there are edible mushrooms. If you don't know the exact difference, you are really sick, or dead. But none of this should matter to a person trying to survive. Don't eat mushrooms. What most books don't explain is that mushrooms are thermogenic. In other words, they take more energy from the body to process, than you obtain from them. Therefore, you can literally starve yourself to death eating mushrooms (that is also why they are considered a diet food... you feel full but you gain nothing). IMHO, Do yourself a favor, find something else to eat.

Excellent point and I agree (mostly). Mushrooms may be thermogenic, but believe that if you CAN distinguish between edible and non-edible varieties, then you are able to meet the basic needs of the body ... food intake. By meeting this need (if only to take the edge off), your mind is then able to focus on other important tasks at hand. IMO, one's state of mind is the paramount survival need.

That's very interesting ... and you're still here   ;) .
Your grandma sounds like she was a wise old bird.

Curious. Is the salt added before or after picking, how much, and how fast was the response?
Looks like I need to add "mushroom chemical reactions" to the research pile (snicker).

If true, another example of down-home knowledge lost in a microwave-ready world. Well, lost on me anyway  .
