Food and water are of course first to come to mind and should certainly be a priority. Your bug out bag should have food and water but what else? Think of yourself in a survival situation. You have nothing but the clothes on your back, it's cold, raining, and you are too many miles from any civilization. Fire and shelter takes care of the cold and raining part.

My important items in my bug out bag are:
1) Radio (solar crank and/or batteries
2) heat blanket
3) fire starters with tender ( found that dryer lint wasn't very good because of the man made fiber that is in clothes)
4) freeze dried food
5) knife (2)
6) flashlight, candles in metal holders
7) extra socks,underware, jacket
8) first aid kit
9) fishing line w hooks
10) purifing tablets for water
11) metal cup ( to cook in)
12) small thermos (brief case size) gotta have my coffee
13) snake bite kit
These are just some of the things I have in my kit.

renoos08, have you ever started a fire in a torrential down pour when the only other items you have are the clothes on your back?
Livdis2, try using OB brand tampoons for your tinder, what pound test is your fishing line?
