Anyone currently use a MOLLE bag as a bug out bag? It looks like an interesting idea, since you can customize what pouches are on your bug out bag. For those unfamiliar, check out this link:

Basically, once you have the main bag, you can attach accessories onto the bag to hold additional items, like magazines, flashlights, etc:

Anyone use anything like this? If so, pictures and descriptions are a must!

I use an old Alice pack for my BOB. I don't see why Molle would be a problem. It is considered an improvement over the ALICE systems the armed forces used to use. I used the Alice pack for the same reasons you mentioned the MOLLE.

That's the pack I keep in my car. I have the larger MOLLE Main Pack in my house loaded up with clothing, boots, and food for a bug out bag in case i need to up and leave. It's amazing how much you can fit in that main pack!

The bags themselves are incredibly durable. You can't tell unless you see the stuff in person...the pouches offer endless combinations and you can buy pretty much whatever parts and pouches you need on eBay.

I should point out that you really want the MOLLE packs and pouches made by SDS. They are the company that supplies the US Army and Marines. The quality and durability that I mentioned above comes with the product made by SDS. Other "Molle" compatible packs and pouches are typically made in China and use much thinner material and lesser quality zippers, etc. I know because I have purchased some of the add-on pouches and was disappointed by the cheap quality.

I assure you once you experience the SDS quality, you'll certainly notice the difference in the cheaper, less durable brands.

The assault pack, which I use (as shown in the link in the previous post) was purchased new off of eBay. You can get the same pack used for around $25. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will definitely pull the trigger on this later this week.

One thought on the ALICE vs the MOLLE, if you go prone the ALICE stays out of the way but the MOLLE falls over your face. Number two, while the whole setup does let you carry more a little easier, beware the "FRAME" as it has a bad reputation for stress damage that can't be fixed and without the frame, well you get the picture. I will stick with the ALICE mediums that I have as I always carry an emergency and a rucksack. Just my humble oppinion. But, 60lbs is way more than enough to carry for far or long. So, think long and hard about how much you stack in the sack and then remember, rifle, shovel, SB, mukluks...well you get the picture.

While I do have the large MOLLE pack with the external frame, I don't use it as my main bug out bag. I use the MOLLE Assault pack which has no frame (just a nice set of shoulder straps) for that. So I have no worries about my bug out bag breaking down. I use the larger pack/frame combo for lighter things like clothing and blankets. It's much too big to fill it up with heavier stuff...It would weigh a ton. But you sure can get alot of clothing in there...at least a weeks' worth for several people.
