If you are lost, first use your cell phone to call the emergency service. If you dont have a cell phone then its gonna be damn difficult. Tats why i insist to carry a cell phone always.
Many places in the wilderness are too far away from cell towers for your phone to work. I would count on it in no way at all. I have been considering getting a small hand held HAM radio for this purpose. I was told by a friend who is a HAM operator that these have a very good range especially when hooking up with a BASE station. If you find the frequency that local emergency personnel use in the area where you are going, this could be very helpful. If you are with a group that has hand held radios of any kind, you can also communicate with anyone that may be in the party you were separated from. These radios are kind of expensive, but would be worth it if they saved you in an emergency.
I also do not go hunting or hiking in any wilderness area without having my BOB with me. This gives me maps, a compass and my GPS unit, along with everything I need for 3 days to survive. This allows me to work on getting myself back to safety immediately without having to worry about food and water.
