I know that this sounds stupid and in some cases does not work, but when we go into the woods that we may not know we leave a trail of something like twigs and such. Does anyone else do this?

Yes, leaving a trial does helps in tracking us. However we cannot be able to leave trial at all situations and at sometimes it might even invite danger.

yeah! but one must keep in mind that leaving a trail is not always safe and one cannot trust it wholeheartedly , because there might occur sudden storms or rainfall which may erase or dust off the trail which you left behind.

Has no one here ever heard of marking? Marking is what cavers and trail people use. Its a chalk that yu use to makrk your path on trees or rocks. Its totally biodegradable will nto harm the environment and is made form crushed rock powder.

You can also use flags, called flagging., Small strips of material about `1/2 inch wide are tied to low branches as you walk along. as you come beck along that trail you remove them.

Safe and allowable in all national parks.

Leaving a trail is not only useful so that people can find you but it is also a great way for finding your way back.

I agree entirely with Julie. I carry fluorescent surveyor's ribbon. It won't wash away on you in a rain storm. and you can easily remove it and even reuse it.

I don't currently leave a trail, unless I'm hunting (I leave the dead animals on rocks for the trip back).

to MARK a trail.

There are numerous ways to mark a trail in an unobtrusive way.

My favorite is to break twigs at a certain height, always break them in the direction traveled so you can backtrack. You'll be able to tell the direction of the break, even if it breaks off.

You can also lay yourself stone markers.

I also like to set myself way points using a compass . . . I stand and orient myself, make a note of where I am and mark that spot specially. That way, I can go back there and re-orient myself if necessary.
