I carry 3 knifes in my bugout bag. One is a heavy duty Alaskan hunting knife that I got in Alaska. It has a heavy duty 4 inch blade. I also cary a good Gerber folding knife with a serrated edge. I also carry a Gerber Multi Tool and it takes up the slack where the others fall short. I think if you have room for a couple knifes you can't hurt yourself carrying extra.

I usually carry a swiss knife. It can be used as a multi functional tool. It can be used for defense and also as a screw driver and can opener. I use a 9 cm long and 2 cm wide knife.

I carry a Swiss Card, Swiss Classic and hubby carried a Dive knife in his bag.
I like the Frost cutlery one hand blade, back lock. But I am more adept with the smaller ones.

I think it is important to have a good heavy bladed knife in my bag such as my Alaskan hunting knife. If you were put into a survival situation where you had to hunt for your food it would be good to have a knife that you could break small bones with when cleaning a kill.

I carry several knives on me/in my pack when in the trails. I carry either my SOG Seal Pup Elite or my 7" kabar along with my spyderco folder. I also bring my leatherman wave along for the ride.

I would love to carry a knife with a larger blade like 7" but here in Texas the legal limit for a knife is 5". I think it is important to have the bag with me in my vehicle wherever I go so I stick with the 5" blade.

Oddly enough, there are no blade length restrictions here in Massachusetts. Though you cannot carry a double edged knife or a knife with a spring assisted opening mechanism (think switchblade).
