Just wondering if anyone has has experience with the Katadyn Exstream purification bottles. I'm looking into getting one for the upcoming hiking season but wanted to get some unput before I shelled out the cash. It seems as the main complaints are (1) a bit of an iodine taste in the water, (2) the amount of water that comes out when squeezing, and (3) the cost of replacement filters, etc.
Any thoughts positive or negative from the forum?

I haven't tried the Katadyn, but love my Sport Berkey. No funky tasting water there!

I know a friend of mine has some sort of bottle from this manufacturer. I'll ask him what model his is and what his thoughts are about it.

I've used Katadyn purifiers before. They work rather well though it can be a bit of a job to get the water out. I'm more of a minimalist so I prefer tablets and or boiling water. Technology is great and those bottles do work, but when I'm on the trails, I want to scale things back and be closer to nature not technology.

I agree with boiling and such when you reach a spot where you are gathering food and such for a day or two before moving on. That is how I do it. When I am on the move and need to keep moving I like having the option to purify water quickly and keep moving. In a real SHTF scenario, if you are in an area over run with thugs killing and taking others preps, having the mechanical option so you can leave the area quickly may be what saves your life.

Nice point. Hadn't thought of it that way. Now you make me want to go and buy one of these filtering bottles. Perhaps I'll just add it to the "wish list".

I'm bumping this thread because I have begun looking into buying a Katadyn filter and a search of this forum brought up this topic.
Does anyone have additional information on the Exstream bottle? It seems like a nice system and wondered if Quake or any of the other users could share some personal experiences.
Thanks!

The Katadyn is a pretty good bottle but the Seychelle water bottles are a bit better. They filter more contaminants up to 99.99% including bacteria and viruses, don't add any ill tastes, last longer, are stainless steel and cost less. I actually do a filter comparison at the site in my signature. That may help.
