Several friends/family of mine have been in similar situations (utilities down, storm damage, etc.). When I've had discussions about preparing for the next disaster, their responses always fall into the "stay with others" or "get a hotel for the night" categories. These folks trust that our government or the Red Cross will come to their aid if things get really bad. I pointed out the tragedy that was Hurricane Katrina, but since we don't live in hurricane country, they think I'm comparing apples to oranges. I've pointed out local examples, but those, so far, have been very small inconveniences to most people around here...not enough to get them worried. I also try to point out that even the government they are relying upon to save them recommends at least a 72-hour stash of supplies. A lot of my attempts to get them thinking about self-reliance fall on deaf ears, and I can't really fathom why, except for reasons of my original post: Most people don't believe anything bad will ever happen to them, unless they've already experienced it firsthand.

Who thought in the Northeast we would be feeling the effects of an earthquake?? Most people evacuated out of buildings which is exactly what YOU ARE NOT supposed to do.

Now we are preparing for Hurricane Irene. Something can happen ANYTIME.

People have been spoiled with the ease of getting water and electricity. I love going camping and know a bit about what is like when you have to fend for yourself. I think everyone should go camping just to see what it would be like and what they will need if anything happens.
