What are the characteristics that I should look for in a good qaulity knife for camping, hiking and survival?

You want a knife that comes from the factory with a nice sharp edge. You also want the knife to be able to hold that edge for a good amount of time (read: a good amount of use). The type of blade material depends on what you plan on using it for and the environment. Knives with a high carbon content can be more prone to rust, but tend to be more durable. I'll make another post with more info on the carbon content of blades later.
You also want a knife that feels good in your hand, one that fits well.
You should also find a knife that has a full tang. This means that the blade part extends into the handle, thus making it a stronger and more durable knife. Whaterver you do, don't buy one of those "rambo" survival knives off of ebay (you know the ones with the entire survival kit in the handle). Thoese knives are not full tang and will simply break apart at the handle when put to moderate use.

I'm going to suggest the Becker/Ka-Bar BK2 Companion knife as quite possibly the best overall camp knife out there. It will cut, chop, shave, slice, pound, hammer, etc etc without damage to the knife itself. I bought one after reading a review from another member on this site and I couldn't be happier with it. Runs around $60-$90 depending on where you get it. I think Amazon.com has the cheapest prices for it.

Check out RAT knives, my 2 recommendations would be the RAT SERE as your main knife and the Izula as you backup.

In addition to a good knife and a good backup knife, I recommend a Leatherman tool. don't get some cheap knock off. Get a brand name tool. You will be surprised how handy these are and you will use it to do things you never thought you could use it for.
