Years ago, I saw a plan/article for a small hydropower rig in Mother Earth News (I think).
Does anyone know where I can find something like this. I've been searching for DH. We have a creek on our property that always has water. DH thinks the drop is enough . . . but we're having trouble finding anything.

A while back I posted about a magazine I found called the Backwoodsman. The most recent issue had an article on how to make a small hydroelectric generator. Here is a link to that thread. http://www.emergencypreparationforum.com/the-backwoodsman-1105.html

Does ANYONE have the article? They don't have these at the library (either the U.K. library or the Public one) and the backwoodsman people haven't answered my emails. I would be so grateful to see the article.

I'll have to find it and scan it for you. I am on the road for work right now, possibly the whole week. I'll find it when I get home.

Hey NB, was wondering if you ever got your Hydro set up? Seems to be a great option if you have access to a water source. We don't here so I'm thinking along the lines of a solar set-up ... if I can fit it on our minimalist property. Does the stream maintain the same flow level throughout the year? Not sure if this a link to Backwoodsman magazine that dclaarjr talked about, but give this a try ... http://www.backwoodsmanmag.com/ and see if this answers your questions.

It is in the May/June issue. You can order it at the website posted above. I am still trying to locate my copy with no success so far. My wife cleaned the reading room and a lot of my reading material is hard to locate.

Given the right location and set-up, hydro seems to be the ultimate energy source (to me anyway) for providing power, running machine tools, grain milling, and other tasks. The ingenuity of our forefathers to harness the natural world never ceases to amaze me ... I love touring old water-wheel mill sites for example. Maybe I'm wrong, but it bothers me that we have become so dependant on "the grid" and other conveniences of life (not all bad mind you), that we have in some way jeapardized our ability to cope with future disasters like grid-failure ... insert expletive here ... there are some segments of our society that feel inability to get their daily soap-opera fix is a major world catastrophy. Anyway, I digress.
I haven't figured all the costs/details/location yet, but my perfect piece of heaven will include a reliable water source for running a mill type operation for hydro-power. I have a dream (snicker).
