You should call 911 if your kid:

* are in immediate danger
* are seriously injured and need medical attention
* are in any other situation that needs immediate attention

When in doubt, call 911. It’s better to be on the safe side. Get tips on what you should say when you call 911.

If it’s not an emergency, but you would still like to contact the police, call 311. No matter where you are, 311 is the non-emergency police number.

A kid should be prepared for emergency situation. They should know some basics like calling 911 in case of some emergency and no adult is available.

i suppose you can talk quietly with your kid,about it and explain a scenario of an emergency to him,trying to find with him a solution,like brainstorming of what he can do in this case.

It is of vital importance to teach kids how to deal with emergencies,specially if a person is living a country that expects lots of earthquakes or tornados or so..the family can deal about a place to meet in these cases and can make the kid memorize this place and how to reach it.
the family can share the kid in preparing their survival kits,in planning and in the scenarios how to handle such disasters.

Children should be given mock ups and a good guidance about the steps that need to be taken while in an emergency.

You should tell them how to react in an emergency situation. Kids are way too smart these days and they will learn it easily and in a better way. So dont worry.

A kid should be properly guided for any emergency situation and as a father i do that. We should teach them what to do.

You are right we should always be cautious about their mindset. We can talk through them if they feel terrible about any such situations.

When a kid reached the age 10, he or she can surely understand any emergency situation but they will panic. So teach them carefully.
