When a kid reached the age 10, he or she can surely understand any emergency situation but they will panic. So teach them carefully.

Kids can be trained to do things before they are 10. Take them camping and have them cook their own food, have them light the fire, keep them involved in all of the tasks. You can do this by making a game of it. If you slowly expand their knowledge and not overwhelm them, they too will become confident and know that if something happens that they can survive if they have to. Boy/Girl Scouts are a very good organizations for helping teach kids these skills.

We should teach them what to do in cases of emergency... remind and practice.
