Thought I would start here... We are a young couple with two kids. Financially impaired at the moment, but there is hope on the horizon (Mr.Rambo just got a job). We are very aware that we should be prepared for whatever happens in the future, but have yet to start preparing ourselves. Hopefully we can gain some insight and help from all of you.
If anyone has any Ideas on starting with a low budget please feel free to comment.

Hello and look forward to meeting everyone.

Welcome Rambos. Good to hear another pair of eyes are open.

I'm a firm believer in growing as much of your own food as possible. Food is essential to life and if you have your own source, that puts you one step ahead of the masses.
Any steps you take in preparedness, keep to yourselves. You don't need everyone in the neighborhood knocking on your door when things get tough. :)

Hello Rambos! I have some Rambos in my area. We have a great group of folks here. Consider networking in your local area with fellow preppers. If the bad stuff happens, I believe that there will be strength in numbers. That being said, I'm not going to be the grocery store/hospital/fuel & ammo depot for folks who didn't have the foresight to prepare. My wife and I have networked with 2 local prepper families, and I think we're better off for it. We don't currently do anything cooperatively (from a prepping standpoint), other than share ideas and information. But if/when TEOTWAWKI happens, we do have a sort of plan to stick together.

Well we just moved to the area so we do not know many people right now. Another thing is that we don't want to say anything to others until we know that they are Preppers too, but then again what if they have the same mind set? How would be the best way to drop the hint but not give us away? I know allot of people (like UncleJoe) are saying on the site not to tell anyone.

This site is really cool though

http://www.ki4u.com/nuclearsurvival/list.htm
It gives a list of all the likely targets incase of a nuclear attack (which is only one of the many things that could a cure), but with it is a list of fallout communities with is really cool. the only thing is that you have to join ahead and allot of them cost allot of $$

Here is a list of those communities by state though if your interested

So all that to say that we don't have the money now to join something like that, and still not sure if we even want to do that. Thought that it was cool though.

Yeah, if you're not really familiar with folks, I'd advise not advertising your preps. You should always be discreet, but eventually, little subtleties will reveal that other folks are of a similar mindset. It's amazing how you can get into discussions with folks who will let little hints slip here and there. Many times, they're trying to gauge if you're a prepper. It'll take a while for you to build enough of a relationship to drop your own subtle hints to see if others pick up on it, and then reveal their own stance on such things.

It's kind of like trying to find out if someone is like-minded in the areas of religion or politics. But eventually you find people with a common mindset.

Been to that website many times...it's a great resource. And a lot of their stuff isn't restricted to nuclear survival either. They have a great recipe for a a home version of a potassium iodide pill here, under Myth #11. I have seen this recipe on other sites as well, although I can't find pharmaceutical grade KI at any of my local drug stores. If you order it online, it's very expensive, so buying the pills is easier and about the same price. However, you can make a TON of doses with a small amount of KI powder.

EDIT:

I found some USP grade KI on ebay...$45/pound!
