I was wondering how many members here have a HAM radio operation? In a major disaster these might be the only real communications left to us for months or longer. Communications is going to be a hugely important part of any plan to gather ourselves and start rebuilding. Does your local Homeland Security people have a HAM set up? Maybe with solar panels for power if we have none?
Instead of giving away hundreds of billions to failing corporations maybe the government should have hooked up every City Hall and Fire Station and Police Station and FEMA office into the HAM system. Would it be a good idea for every large church to have their own HAM radio club?
What are your thoughts on the possible importance of HAM radio to a future disaster??
This topic has probably already been covered, but I am a newbie.

I am a ham operator and I know first hand how important amateur radio is in time of emergency response. Communications completely break down and repeater and line of site communications is all that is left. You are the only contact to the outside world and you better be prepared to handle the moment. Complete chaos, no water, no food, complete colapse in security and civil control. It is imparible you have armed security to protect you and your resources. Greg

I am interested in this as well. I figure it will be good to be able to find like minded people and if it is real bad, band together for security, diversity in skills and help form a new community.
I just don't have any clue where to start. I do know I would need my equipment to be portable, and preferably able to carry it in my BOB. This way I can have it with me no matter what happens.
Does anyone have any advise to offer that could help someone who knows nothing about HAM radios get started?
