How many of you have GPS receivers in your survival kit bag. I have a GPS one and I use it most of the time to find my way in urban areas and also in woods to identify mountains etc. The most important thing is not to get lost.Do you use GPS receivers in your survival trips and how much usage is it for you.

We have a GPS that we use all the time. Here is a funny story regarding the GPS~ my son and his friends all decided that they were going to go into Buffalo, NY to go to Hooters. They typed in Hooters into the GPS and it took them to a donut shop. They then tried again and before they realized it, they were on the bridge taking them into Canada. They asked them why they were going into Canada and they said that they weren't, they were going to Hooters. Long story short, the GPS was taking them to HOoters in Canada. It was hard for them to get back into the US because they didn't have proper paperwork with them. Regardless of this, I do agree that GPS systems are a good thing to have.

I love my GPS, but it's also important to know how to use a topo map, and to include one in your pack! Nothing would be worse than hiking 10+ miles, and then the GPS batteries die.

I use a Garmin eTrex. Pretty cheap ($100), and reliable.

I have three of them plus a new one from "Sportsman Guide" that will help you find your house, car and one more item.........let's say that you go to the Super Bowl while outside you car you wait for this particular gps to come in and then in the image of your car you punch it in, after leaving the game you then turn it back on and a arrow will guide you to your car.
While on vacation in a foreign city you would punch in your hotel and you would never get lost.
It has memory for tree different places
Price of $65.00.

I would spend the money for one that will allow you to load topographic maps and you can set 100 or more waypoints. This way you can set your cache points, hide out locations as well as vehicles, camp sites or whatever you need to at any time. With a flash memory card you can store stuff in it forever.

I've got a GPS unit in my car, but that is the only place I would use it...I don't trust a GPS unit in the wilderness because who knows how long the battery will last, and the wilderness is not exactly kind to sensitive and fragile technology (especially when tossed into a backpack)...
With that in mind though, I do think a GPS unit is a great item to have as part of your bug out plan...When you're trying to get out of dodge and the highways are all jammed with traffic it's nice to know the back roads that you can travel as you're going across country to get to somewhere safe...

I do not advocate relying on just GPS in the wilderness. I also use topographical maps and a military lensatic compass. I also have NIMH rechargeable batteries for mine along with a solar battery charger. When Hiking I can attach the charger on top of my pack and the batteries will charge while I am on the move. I keep 2 sets of these batteries for each battery operates device I use, along with several sets of the Energizer maximum batteries for each. A good hand held GPS unit is shock and water resistant, but like I said in my last post, you have to spend the money on a good unit.
