Does anyone know where I could find some information on goat farming? I see a few farmers around our area that have them and was wondering what the advantage of goats would be...besides goats milk? Are they primarily for dairy products?

owning goats is great. First they can eat down all kinds of weeds. And if your lucky and you like goat milk you can have that as well. Places like Tractor Supply have magazines on the subject. Mother Earth news also has in the back in the classified section books on it.

Goat farming is good, you can get fresh milk and meat. However you would need atleast quite a lot space in your garden for doing these. Further not everyone can be successful in them as they require lot of patience.

You can also rent out your goats to people wanting to clear their land. I once saw a bunch of goats at the airport. They were being used to clear some land out by one of the runways.
I think a lot of people overlook using goats for their meat.. but goat meat is good. If you're going to use a goat for milk, you want to avoid certain breeds because some breeds produce very foul milk. (and all breeds produce foul milk, if they're allowed to eat just anything)

Goats are best for just their milk, please don't eat them, unless you are breeding a whole flock. The meat doesn't stay fresh, cows are better for meat.

You can go ahead and eat a goat of course, perfectly edible, but I wouldn't suggest it. It's kind of like lambchops, and I prefer pork myself...Unless it is fresh, but it is a big hassle to breed sheep like that, a guy on the other end of town has some sheep.

A lot of people keep goats as pets and don't drink their milk either. Let me know how it goes.
