Uncle Dave what do you keep your prep level at with .22 ammo. Do you plan to use this ammo for small game if the need arises? You're not thinking self defense with this ammo are you? Just wondering my .22 is fairly low also and now you have me thinking.
Since my name is Dave, I will answer this also.
No I don't plan on using it for self defense. In rifle I have an AR and a couple of bolt action hunting rifles, along with a couple of shotguns and handguns. In a real bad situation, I would let my wife and daughters use 22 to help repel a gang of looters. They are recoil shy, and in a situation like that, any firepower would help. I also have young grandsons that are still too young to shoot yet, but I do have youth guns in the safe for when they are ready.
The center fire rifles and pistols I reload my own ammo for. I keep about 1,000 rounds ready to go for each and maintain the supplies to reload about 5,000 more. I am working on getting the equipment and supplies for shotgun, and will probably stock about the same. I try to keep 5,000 rounds of 22 LR for each gun since I can't reload it. I haven't started stocking for the grandsons guns yet, but I have 2 rifles and a pistol to feed with that.
Most people think my stocks are overkill, and they probably are. However, in a long term survival situation, I know I will have ammo for hunting and self defense. If things get real tight, UncleJoe is right. A well placed shot with a 22LR is lethal as well. I know I don't want to be shot with it.
