Something I was thinking about. If you lose power at home and have to go into survival mode (no electricity) you need gasoline. Why? to run the generators. At least we do. Also extra gasoline in case you can't get out of your driveway (Ice storms in NY are bad)- you still need gasoline to run the 4-wheelers or tractors to plow out the driveway. Also a lot of times snowmobiles and 4-wheelers are the only way to get around when it's snowing bad and icy.

That's a very valid point. I guess we want to have the appropriate container for storing gas, too. I think there are regulations about that, and the approved containers probably have markings to that effect. I assume storing gas in the wrong container could be dangerous. Does it have something to do with the fumes?

Yes, gasoline is very important for a comfortable survival. Considering all our energy powered devices works on gasoline carrying a little amount of them will make a great impact on our surviving capabilities.

Nice piece of info, mate. Thanks for sharing. But let me tell you something from my side, Many accidents involve gasoline being used in an attempt to light bonfires; rather than helping the material on the bonfire to burn, some of the gasoline vaporises quickly after being poured and mixes with the surrounding air, so when the fire is lit a moment later the vapor surrounding the bonfire instantly ignites in a large fireball, engulfing the unwary user.

The right container has just as much to do with fuel degradation as fume control. Fuel stored in say a milk jug will break down faster than say, a certified Blitz can. Plastic blitz cans are supposed to be better than the older metal ones, ( I prefer the five gallon jerry cans myslef). Another consideration is location, cool, dry place, preferably out of direct sun will keep your gas fresh longer. Dont under estimate fuel additives, right now I use Sta-Bul (spelling?), but there are others out there that are supposed to be just as good.

I keep some on hand from back with the gas prices skyrocketting. I was pretty unsure at that time exactly what was going to happen (riots, etc), so I stocked up on some gas. I just rotate it every month, haven't had any problems running month old gas in my SUV yet.

I don't store a lot of gas in containers. I do have a 5 gal can that I keep full for the mower and a 2 gal can for 2 cycle gas for the chainsaw and weed eater. Other than that I have 4 vehicles we own as well as my work van which are normally kept full of gas. If the power goes out that gives me about 115 gallons to feed the generator with. Since 1/2 gallon lasts about 8 hours in it, I am not too worried about stockpiling more gas than I have.
