Get Materials:
Old candles
egg cartons
Sawdust from wood

Directions:
melt the candles in an old pot, I suggest using always the same one, the wax has to be completly liquid
fill some sawdust into the egg carton, fill the whole carton, or even multiple cartons, a didn't find a solution for plastic egg cartons
get the hot wax. You have to carefully pour it onto the sawdust, you need quite a lot of wax, if it gets solid on the top of the sawdust, the wax wasn't hot enought. Fill all portions and let it cool for some time.
You can use them for all your fire needs, throw some of them in your backpack if your hiking or biking or doing whatever outside.

Improvements:
melting the wax with a microwave, a bit tricky!

I'm gonna make some of these little fire starters and take em with me on my next campin trip. Thanks for the idea.

Well, I tried it, and it worked OK.

I had a pressed paper type egg carton and a few old candles. DH was doing some cutting with Oak on the table saw. So I figured I'd give it a try.

I filled each of the egg spots about 2/3 of the way with sawdust.

I melted the wax in a small saucepan with a spigot over hot water, then I removed the wicks and poured the wax into the first mold.

It didn't sink in all that well, so I stirred it with a metal skewer and after the initial surface tension was overcome, it mixed well. The kids are calling them "Fire Pucks" and they think these things are neato.

DH was looking over it and suggested a center dimple would help, so he took a golf tee and made a dimple all the way to the bottom. The second one went much better and the wax seemed to penetrate out into the sawdust quite quickly.

Well, I started the fire in our little firepit outside with one and it worked quite well. I used a little bit of tinder (just some bits of splintered wood and the "fire puck" The firepuck burned up one side almost like a lamp and allowed me to get a fire started easily.

Frankly, I think these little pucks could be just about 1/2" thick and that would be plenty big enough.

OK, this worked MUCH better with parafin candles than with the beesewax.

Im going to give this a try, these things sound like the would work great.
