Not really ready to eat insects for their protein content?
Start collecting pigeons!
Pigeons were originally brought to the New World as a food source. In fact, I saw a show on The Travel Channel where a fellow was served pigeon in an Egyptian eatery. He said it was quite tasty.
What other wildlife might we use for food??

Rabbits. Healthy and fat free. Although, rabbits cannot be relied upon solely for food, since the lack of fat in them causes "rabbit starvation".

Sounds a bit "redneck" but there's quite a few squirrel in my area...

The low fat content means there is almost no cholesterol. This makes them perfect to put into your diet if you need to lower it. The human body does need some fat/cholesterol to survive.

Yes, pigeons and rabbits were used as food resources. The sea shell eating was also common among ancient Greeks as it provided a valuable source of protein for their army whenever they have to fight near sea.
