Now, don't laugh- none of us I'm sure have thought about having a flash drive in a BOB. However, how many of us have paper documents (will, life ins policy, birth certificate) that could easily be scanned and saved on a flash drive? Flash drives are more durable than simple papers- why not carry a flash drive for these documents?
Anyone have any good reasons not to do this?

Why not whole books of "how to"......even if there is no internet if you have a comp and power then that's all that you would need.

That's a great idea. I'll take it one step further. My cell phone is one of those fancy pda phones. I has a slot for a small memory card. While I never thought about it until now, I can put all sorts of information on that card and thus have it with my phone. I can read the documents, email them, search the internet all from my phone since it's like a mini computer.
Finally, I've got one of those crank emergency flashlights and it also has the adapter so I can charge my phone, so i'll always have access to the information stored on the card.
Thanks for the idea.

I think I prefer the SD card for my bugout bag. It works in my phone, my ebook reader, my computer, any usb port (with an adapter), my camera.
I keep all my important data on it, including photos of things, manuals, and ebooks.
On my computer, I have a directory called "projects" that has all my personal data, so I backup my Outlook, Projects, and ebook library. This is the way I backup all the time, and I swap the backup in the machine with the one in my purse (parked in my phone).
It works.

Now that's a great idea ... think of all the reference material you could fit on a lightweight series of storage devices. Thanks for the posts, just made my day.

I have a USB drive in my EDC key wallet. It contains business records and survival files.
