Does anybody have a favorite camp bed, mattress, or cot? I'm going to buy some new sleeping gear and was wondering what everybody’s favorite sleeping apparatus is. Are blow up air mattress' worth looking at or do they go flat half way through the night? I'm not sure if a cot would work for me because I like to sleep stretched out.

Doesn't that depend a whole lot on your circumstances? If you're in a motorhome, it's all about comfort. If it's in a tent at a campground, an air mattress fills the bill for comfort without taking up a lot of space in your car when it's deflated. If you're packing into the wilderness or bugging out on foot, weight will be the big issue, meaning a thin foam pad, tiny tent, and two-layered down bag.

I'm looking for a self inflating mattress to take with me hiking, so I would want it to be pretty thin, but still comfortable.

Don't know if you've bought yet, but for hiking get a THERMAREST ... IMO the best available for comfort and packability. Your mileage may vary, but ours (2-regular and 1-camprest) have lasted dar-near forever (1980's to present) through many many rock and pointy-stick laden canoe and camping adventures without need for repair. The regular is about football size when rolled, and the camprest roughly 8" round x 27" wide. Both are very lightweight.
If you're looking more in-line with car camping or shorter hiking distances, then take a close look at CABELAS DELUXE CAMP BED. Two 3" open-cell foam versions are offered under $100 (72"L x 30"W x 3"H and 78"L x 48"W x 3"H) ... you're not feeling anything through those suckers. The drawback is they only compress to dufflebag size, roughly 14"round x the mattress width above. Great comfort and no need to worry about puncture leaks, with the tradeoff being packability.

Can someone provide the pros and cons of a sleeping pad versus an air mattress?
