It looks like I've stumbled onto one of the best preparedness forums out there! Everyone has been so nice and made me feel very welcome.

Let's see... about myself... I'm a stay-at-home mom with 4- and 7-year old girls. We live in a small raised ranch in Columbia, MD, having moved here 2 years ago from the Detroit suburb of Fraser. I enjoy gardening, reading, sewing, cooking, baking, and crocheting. I have a great husband who is very tolerant of my "prepping hobby" but has told me that if I start looking at caves or bunkers he'll have to draw the line.

I've been very anti-firearm all my life but I just don't like the way things are going and the criminals don't seem to be getting any friendlier so I think the time has come to go ahead and buy one. I'm going to start with the Mossberg 500 youth pump shotgun, and then figure out which handgun I want when I'm taking the classes.

I'm new to prepping but I've read a bit on the subject. If anyone has some recommendations for good books on the subject, I'm always looking for suggestions. Here's what I've read:

-How to Survive the End of the World As We Know It by James Wesley Rawles
-The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving the Economic Collapse by Fernando Ferfal Aguirre (I highly recommend this book)
-Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook by Peggy Layton
-Cookin' With Home Storage by Peggy Layton

-Just in Case: How to be Self-Sufficient When the Unexpected Happens by Kathy Harrison
-One Second After by William Forstchen
-The Great Depression Ahead: How to Prosper in the Crash Following the Greatest Boom in History by Harry Dent
