My granddaughter was about 15 months old. She needed a diaper change so I laid her down and she started choking really bad. I snatched her up held her face down on my arm and using the heel of my hand popped her between the shoulder blades. Out popped a penny! My 16 yr old (18 now) saw the whole thing and was so impressed lol. He was at the time taking a health class and he told his teacher about me saving Vivis life hehehhe. He asked me how I knew what to do. I took classes before I had kids. I just continued to change her diaper while my son stood there with his mouth wide open like, wow. lol.

Hoygirl, great story, I think there has been too much emphasis on the heimlich... those of us who have actually taken in depth first aid, know that the "old way" of popping between the shoulder blades, is still the best way to start out and it WORKS especially on kids. Heimlich should not be used unless necessary as it can cause injury... I had a very similar situation when I was 15, my baby sister was choking on a bottle cap, I picked her up by the feet and cracked her between the shoulder blades and the bottle cap flew accross the room.

Thats the best use of Heimlich. Unfortunately I haven't used my first aid training yet and I am waiting to use them and eagerly waiting for the day.

That is a great story! You took control of the situation and everything was fine. Thankfully I have never had to use my training. I hope that I would handle it just as calmly as you did.

Actually that will work on a baby but you can`t put on adult on your arm lol. You can even do it to your self with a chair. If you hit an adult thats choking on the back it could make the object go further down. If they are coughing you do nothing. If they are obviously choking and not getting air then the regular heimlich (Can`t spell it right) will work.

No, I have never needed to use it, and I am greatful for that. I would prefer the people who are around me to remain safe, rahter than have me come to the rescue.

Thankfully, no. Although I did cut my pinky finger almost in half, it wasn't life threatening. Applying pressure was just all that needed (and 10 stitches).
