Electrical fire are usually caused with bad wires or with short circuits to prevent them you should check all your wires and see that they are full proofed. Refrain from overloading the sockets.

You can use any fire extinguisher that is not water based. You will be electrocuted if you use water. Also, have someone turn off the main breaker to the house as soon as it is safe to do so. Once the power is cut it will be safe to use water, and you will have a better chance of getting the fire out.
Make sure you have a plan to get out of your house and make sure everyone uses it. If you can't get the fire out immediately get out and call the Fire Department.

Use the carbon foot print to reduce what you use in excess.

In the case of an electrical fire you have to use fire extinguishers such as carbon tetrachloride which are specially designed to control electrical fires. Using water in the case of an electrical fire would lead to a disaster.

Can electrical fires be smothered with things like flour or baking powder?
I wonder because shorts can happen int he kitchen, if you are very unlucky, and it might cause less damage to use something like flour to put out the fire.
