The hubby and I have been half tempted to save up and get one of those homes that is built into the side of a mountain.
Don't you think it would be a great place to retreat to when chaos over takes areas with traditional housing?
The temperature wouldn't fluctuate much and, with enough vegetation it would never be seen.

A place like that would be great. However, if you build one, you will have to make sure that you pick a location where water runoff will run away from it and there is no chance of a flash flood running through the valley or gully that the front would face.
Heating and cooling it would be easy with most of being underground, and it would be comfortable to live in. If things got real bad, I wouldn't mind having a place like that myself.

Yes, that would be a great decision to do. Living near mountains have a lot of advantages, it is a clear natural barrier against natural calamities. Further it would also help us to live in a nice natural environment away from the urban jungles.

I would only say that if you can live there for a holiday I would recommend that but for living there always I won't since you would be too far from the comfort of the updated society and technology.

Its really a great place to stay provided that the weather is not too rough on the hills and you have a complete back up to face situations like too stormy winds and other effects.

This type of shelter is actually more resistant to stormy weather, high winds and other things like that. Since the Earth itself makes up a good portion of the structure, there is less that storms can affect. I would not want to live in one now, but if SHTF I think it would be a very safe, and somewhat comfortable place to stay and survive.

My brother in law built 30 underground homes in the 80's. He said the drainage around the site is the first thing to consider. Next it needs a southern exposure to naturally heat it. Some looked ike caves inside with a lot of stone on the walls others had drywall and looked like a conventional home.

As long as I wouldn't feel cramped inside (I'm a bit claustrophobic) then I think I'd be happy in one of these homes.
