Since the 9/11 attacks the fear of terrorist groups using dirty bombs has increased significantly, which has been frequently reported in the media. What are the basic precaution steps that can be taken in order to avoid the aftereffects in a dirty bomb explosion.

Dirty bombs aren't that large of an issue, to be honest. Often, the radioactive material is of low purity, and is dissipated by winds and rainfall rapidly, especially in a large city. Basic precautions (staying inside, covering windows) will go a long way to preventing any residual radiation from affecting you.
However, the public response is often more damaging. People panic, loot empty houses and businesses, and cause mayhem whenever there is any disaster.

Keep iodine on hand. Other than that, stay indoors and turn off the air conditioning unit, or outside heating unit. Control the amount of outside air getting into your house, and you'll be good to go!
