Hubby has been fiddling with this idea for a while. we found a few places to dig a new one. One of teh benefits is that it acts like a fridge. Foods stay well preserved in the place and while you may not consider it normally, it would be a nice added underground pantry, lined in cap block, painted so its bright, shelves. You could make it pretty not just a hole.

We have talked about this as well Julie but I am not sure where we would dig one on our property. Its pretty flat around our house. I have no idea where to start though but I suppose there is plenty of information out there on how to do it.

I have the same small cellar near my storage room. We usually store old metal parts, cans and sometimes gasoline in them. It is useful to keep somethings underground than keeping them above the ground.

we found the one in the barn, that place is so cool (temperature wise) we found some old jars with stuff in it, the bands are rusted. The tractor was always parked in front of the door so we never really saw it as anything other than a wall!

Anyway I went hunting and found that you can build an above ground (its about 4 feet into the soil really) made of insulite filled cinder block. Its really pretty. More like a mini spring house. You could consider one of those. Potatoes keep so much better in there they don't "eye".

Now that we have one we are just going to clean it up! In the spring, sometime, when we can move the tractor.
